When I was 15, I discovered that my mom was the star of a 1980’s cult horror film. Many of us can point to a moment when we learned something about our parent that reframed them as a person. Finding out about this movie - and watching it - was that moment for me. It tipped our close relationship into new and uncomfortable territory and made me second guess a lot of what I thought I knew about her - and about the world (she was my world I later realized). I was plagued by questions that required a level of nuance I did not yet have. Questions about the parent/child dynamic, about secrecy and modeling, about women in movies... especially horror films... and about how to engage with art that simultaneously exploits and inspires. This short is the seed of that idea.
