António’s journey allows him to discover the beauty of music alongside an understanding of responsibility and care for his loved ones. The musical genre of Fado is the backdrop to Vítor and António’s relationship, either from Vítor’s musical past or António’s growing curiosity in seeing live music for the first time. This is a Portuguese music genre that deals with themes of melancholia, nostalgia, love, and the hardship of daily life. Shooting in the village of Sobrosa where I grew up allowed me to bring in the sense of communion distinct to this small countryside village where everyone knows and talks to each other. Moreover, by introducing cultural aspects of Sobrosa such as the ranch band, we introduce a carnivalesque element that contrasts with the peaceful environment of the village. This allows for a sense of wonder as we watch António see the musical bands arrive for the first time.
