I grew up in the Bible Belt. From a very young age, I remember the concept of “church” and where you stood with it hitting hard and fast, before puberty and algebra. Were you in or out? If you were in, how in? What was the exact status of your soul today? Kids would try to recruit my brothers and I each summer, when “Vacation Bible School” was in full swing. Their pastors told them that as long as all the lost souls in the neighborhood said one single phrase, they could count us in their tally and salvation would be a done deal. All of this fired me up and got me in lots of trouble as a kid, because I would often challenge kids and adults alike with the question, “Why does where we go on Sunday matter? Isn’t it our actions throughout the week that do?” I saw hypocrisy at an early age and I didn’t like it. This film allowed me to explore all of this — church attendance, family dynamics, and what it truly means to be a “good person” in a fun, humorous way, with an incredible team.
