Joyrider is a film about transitions, sudden change and finding happiness in it all. Growing up as a diplomat’s child, I didn’t have a say in when we would leave or where we were off to next. It taught me to live in the moment despite the inevitable heartache of saying goodbye to people, places and yes even things. It may seem benign to assign significance to an inanimate object like a car, but when the thing becomes a connection to the past or to loved ones who are no longer with us, these objects are elevated to a place of deep importance – they become a part of us and our personal histories. For those like me who moved around during their formative years, memories and reminders of the past are sometimes all we have. At the end of the day though, it is ultimately that feeling of a place that we strive for. These precious objects may be a link or a reminder, but it’s the people and the memories of that specific time that lives on in us.
