Palimpsest stems from an interest in the subtle details that can alter domestic spaces. Our immediate, personal environment is flooded by a range of sounds, scents and colors that we may not be aware of, but that can have a deep, psychological effect on our daily lives. In the film we introduce the idea of “house tuning” as a sort of modern therapy that people might use to diagnose domestic problem areas and tune their homes on a musical scale to be in better harmony with their surroundings. Even though the occupation of a house tuner is entirely fictional, New York City seems like the most likely setting for someone with a job of this nature to flourish. And the city, with its orchestra of sounds, drives our main character’s passionate search for the perfect balance.
