Pregnancy is conventionally viewed as a time that binds a couple together. Parents align around their new baby because children have a way of revealing our shared priorities. They can also reveal our apprehensions, our shortcomings, and our flaws. And sometimes those flaws can drive us apart. My first child was a crash course in modern medicine’s method of extensive testing during pregnancy. Often, our conscientious OB/GYN would run labs and pose questions to things that we weren’t yet ready to answer. Nevertheless, the tests were offered and the results might be useful, so we decided to take every one. This sent me down a research rabbit hole where I encountered all kinds of wild and wonderful details about pregnancy. That's when I learned about REM in the womb, and that fetuses actually dream. My dreams are amalgamations of my previous experiences — things I’ve done or seen. But what has a fetus done or seen? What would an unborn baby actually dream about?
