My aunt died in her bed after a several years long struggle with breast cancer. The problem was, nobody knew she had cancer until it had metastasized to her bones, leaving her immobile weeks before her death. Our family was turned upside down. We couldn’t understand why she never sought treatment and why she kept her illness a secret for so long. During the funeral, my poor uncle stood before everyone and began berating my aunt for her own death. He had to be carried off stage by his son. We watch the video footage of the funeral as a family regularly and we laugh together at how absurdly my uncle’s grief manifested. As a family, we believe observing the absurdities of life brings a levity and sense of humor to the most sorrowful moments. That is why I co-wrote this short film. I wanted to tell a story about a family who isn’t too far from my own. A family that botches everything ceremonious and emotional, but ultimately, a family that sticks together.
