Filmmaker Statement

I made this film in an effort to provide preposterous, outlandish entertainment to my friends and family, while also telling a story that had larger resonances relating to my concerns when I wrote it (different responses to aging and the end of relationships; the relationships between landlords and tenants). Structurally, the main inspiration for this short film was "Children of Paradise", an old French movie that relies on an aesthetics of circularity and incompletion. From this film I took the following aesthetic strategies: characters are defined in terms of their relationships to one another; they often speak to each other only once in the course of the film; they often comically misunderstand or outright ignore one another. In terms of subject, this film was inspired by vampire movies, which often incorporate real estate into their plot dynamics. Certain images, such as the four-poser bed, the sleeping woman, vegetation, and mirrors were also taken from these films.
