Filmmaker Statement

Tape is inspired by a true story; when my friend was sixteen, she was harassed, bullied and eventually kicked out of her hockey team, because she was in love with another girl. The chain of events she experienced changed her and left her with a fear of not belonging, being ashamed. Her story stuck with me for years. I knew I had to tackle it - I wanted to share the experience of becoming suddenly an outsider in one’s own social network, something I had once felt as well. As a filmmaker I’m interested in exploring psychological and behavioral changes, often caused by a social event, mental or a physical trauma. I believe that the power of cinema is in the shared experience; in our ability to step into the shoes of the other and to relive someone else’s truth.
