Filmmaker Statement

“Perhaps the greatest reward of authorship is to make happen what should have happened but didn’t.” The act of telling the story of Alone Together has been about finally acknowledging an unspoken trauma, wrestling with some of my deepest fears, and giving the younger version of myself the credit she deserved for persevering. It was immensely difficult to bring something to life that even remotely represented my own experiences — things that needed to feel real and authentic. Things that I was both happy and sad for people to relate to. Sexual trauma is such a vulnerable topic that oftentimes in an effort to help others not feel shame, I still found in myself — my own shame. But every moment of shame has been matched by someone telling me about their own story or a conversation that has started because of this film. I can’t ignore how powerful that is — it’s certainly something a lot stronger than shame.
