The story is inspired from real life. There are different kinds of "Aunties" around the director. There are young and single aunties like the protagonist Lin in the film who help their siblings raise kids, but also aunties who have divorced and have no children in their late fifties who regard taking care of the other family members such as their parents and sibling's children as all their sustenance and responsibility. People often say that Americans live for themselves, while Chinese live for their families. The director believes that more precisely, Chinese women live for their families. Millions of people like 'aunties' voluntarily or forcibly sacrifice and give up their lives in order to fulfill family responsibilities, moral constraints, or' take it for granted '. Because they live for others for a long time, they will lose themselves and forget what truly belongs to their own life value, but most of them do not realize this. So the director hopes to encourage all women not to live for others, but to live for themselves through this film. Their meaning and value in life should not be constrained or restricted by responsibility and morality, but should also enjoy life to the fullest and realize their self-worth.
