Filmmaker Statement

Gender and sexuality are very intimate things - but they are also very public. Part of the joy of queer experience is sharing in community. So what happens when others can’t spot our identities? Gabriella and Kel joke that their relationship is so queer it becomes straight again. This concept is the genesis for this project - we are excited to explore a deeply queer relationship that gets read as straight by family and the broader world. We created this film through a highly collaborative process drawing from the lived experience of the cast and filmmakers. As a filmmaking team, we bring our backgrounds as queer and trans people who have moved through “visibly queer” and “straight-passing” relationships. We hope to unpack what our relationships say about us and how we can control the narrative of our own identities - all while bringing nuanced, delightful queer storytelling to audiences who want to see families learn how to embrace each other for who they truly are. --Rebecca Marqu
