After working within music videos as a director and editor, I realised I wanted to direct comedy from the female perspective. I was lucky to be introduced to Abigail who approached me with a great script and three-dimensional leading character with a lot of drive. From the start, we instantly understood each other’s humour yet continually asked ourselves; Who are we laughing at? Why are we laughing? How can we emit humour from our location and camera styles? Visually, my influences ranged mainly from internet culture; Vines, Fried Memes, and Skate Videos. Abigail and I continued to collaborate through improv on set, and to further develop the tone, through more internet-themed textures and punchlines in the edit. It was crucial our jokes were ones we could personally and painfully relate to, ones in which womxn can really identify with the embarrassment and within that the hilarity. The story is set both in reality and in the online world, which leans into both masculine and feminine internet worlds and aesthetics, which is what we both related to and what we wanted to see on film.
