This film began as a collaboration between two trans men - myself and Saint Hills aka Jaime Jobim. While his relentless drive is what first drove me to him, it's his willingness to engage fully in a process of becoming, to accept change as it comes to him and through him, that I find so beautiful about him as a character. As a trans immigrant, Jaime describes himself as someone who is "in transition always," a sentiment that can be shared by anyone who has ever lived on the margins of society, lost in between cultures, places, or identities. This film lives in the specifics of Jaime's life, but his experiences are shared by many. In a country where the right to bodily autonomy is under an onslaught of new threats, trans voices are a key part of the fight for rights over one's own body. Jaime's journey with his changing voice is a hopeful one, a portrait of what trans people can create when we're supported as our whole authentic selves. There's an inherent queerness in Jaime's willingness to grow in any direction, just as there's an inherent queerness to music, performance, to creating art with the body. My hope is that by seeing this film, and by meeting Jaime, viewers will be able to embrace the power of change in the world, in others, and in themselves.
