Filmmaker Statement

Nubia Way tells the story of a Black self-build on a quiet cul-de-sac in the London borough of Lewisham. The thirteen timber framed houses were built in 1997 by Fusions Jameen, London’s first black-led housing co-operative, as part of an innovative housing initiative that offered prospective residents long-term discounted rents in return for building the homes. Through interviews with residents, architects and historians, the film explores how the project evolved as a response to racism and housing discrimination, as well as the combination of community organising and architectural innovation that made the project possible.
