Filmmaker Statement

SUPERFAN is based on a personal tale of youthful obsession and toxic friendship, we set out to create this suburban comedy-drama. It’s a clash between two girls of different cultures and privilege, and about the positive power of fantasy. Growing up as a first-generation child of Mexican parents, Karina's experiences were always intertwined with the presence of another culture. She constantly found herself in unfriendly spaces with highly competitive girls who were more interested in winning a competition that she didn’t even know she was in. This was something that resonated for us in creating this based-on-a-true story. It's also set it in the strange land of the American suburbs, where we each could draw from our own childhood experiences and nostalgia. We’re proud of bringing this film to life, along with our collaborators in the Pacific Northwest.
