Filmmaker Statement

The Jennifer Meyers Story is based on my professional experience working in true crime television. As a reenactment producer, I had an uncommon proximity to case files and the formulaic process through which they were molded into concise episodes. Over the years, I began to feel that homogenizing individual tragedies to fit the hour-long format of a show inadvertently resulted in devaluating the human lives at the core of these stories. It also spoke to the industry of true crime that there was never any shortage of content; there were always more horrific cases of violence against women. For every brutal story of a beautiful mother of three found in a trash bag, there were seven more on the server that the network was eager to green-light. It was endless. After years on the air and hundreds of episodes, our show kept discovering new instances of mass carnage. It felt like we were fighting a rising tide.
