It was important to tell the story of “The Ol’ College Try” because of its personal themes and original characters. While it acts as a coming-of-age story within the framework of a neo-noir crime drama, it is not just a study in genre. Our goal was to create a story with complex, colorful characters that can explore themes of growth, pain, and the consequences of one’s decisions, especially when it seems the course of events are detached from our control. I drew inspiration from classic gangster, crime, and western films, as well as the Safdie brothers’ intense visual and editing style. I also encouraged high levels of excess in performance and an added emphasis on costume, set design, and lighting. We strived to create unique memorable characters in a distinct and grounded world, while making the most of our resources. We hope you enjoy the final product.
