Would you rather have everybody staring you down like a zoo animal or ignoring you into oblivion? A mix of both? Us, too. My partner, Alex (both in life and this project), and I both have two very different takes on birthdays. One is throwing a parade where everyone marches around with t-shirts with your name on them. The other is...more subtle. From our own shared experience, names, and Zodiac signs (August 16 & 17), Twenty-Nine Again was born. The family dynamics that live inside us drove the story forward as we explored what it means to age as a queer person. As things get more and more "unprecedented," so does our thinking when it comes to the future. Everyone has related to this birthday-morning-saga in such different ways, but they all thrill me because I get to see a piece of each person open up that I hadn't before. So while we might not all agree on birthdays and the woes of aging, sharing this little gay slice of life is more than enough to put a smile on our faces.
