Filmmaker Statement

'We Move' roughly translates to “showing perseverance in the face of growing obstacles” & has come to mean two things - a rallying cry (noun) or the choice-less state of constantly battling whatever life throws at you (verb). Inspired by a friend’s photo exhibition of the same name & my knowledge of this phrase, I was engulfed by the automation with which young (mostly Black) people lived this phrase while paying no mind to the emotional, physical & mental collateral damage that this teflon attitude could create. I set out with the script (based on the original photo exhibition) and subsequently with my talented collaborators on the film, to acknowledge these struggles and create a sense of community for those in similar positions, while also explicitly pointing to the light at the end of the tunnel. We hope we've been able to achieve that. Hopefully, the next time you’re faced with one of life’s many challenges, you take the time to prioritise yourself before bellowing: WE MOVE!
